Oscar Nominations 2024: Multiple talking points as nominees revealed

The Oscar Nominations in 2024 for the 96th edition of the Academy Awards have brought some controversy, something which seems to happen every year for the ceremony.

While Oppenheimer leads the way in nominations with 13, its Summer blockbuster counterpart Barbie is at the heart of many conversations for being looked over in certain categories.

Many people are unhappy at the fact that both the star of the movie, Margot Robbie, and the film’s director Greta Gerwig were both snubbed for the Best Actress and Best Director awards respectively.

Gerwig and Robbie are still nominated in other categories, though, and America Ferrera is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, so it isn’t completely underrepresented. 

Other films that rightfully found their way into multiple categories are Leonardo DiCaprio’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things starring Emma Stone.

Interestingly, cult hit and social media phenomenon Saltburn received no nominations despite being recognised at various other film awards. However, it isn’t all too surprising given the controversial films nature and the Academy's tendency to shy away from these sorts of projects.

History has also been made as for the first time at the Academy Awards, three films directed by women have been nominated for Best Picture - Barbie (Greta Gerwig), Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Triet) and Past Lives (Celine Song).
