Sky Cinema new releases: What’s on in July

Civil War - 1st June

Acclaimed writer/director Alex Garland (Ex Machina28 Days Later) returns with a gripping vision of a hypothetical civil war in modern-day USA. The movie follows a bunch of roving photographers as they travel across the country towards Washington DC, snapping pics of the nightmarish sights along the way.

In today’s divided world, it’s all frighteningly plausible - and just plain frightening in places (looking at you, Jesse Plemons). But it’s also a great, if sobering, watch.

Stars Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man), Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent) and Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus).

Grand Prix of Europe - 3rd July

German animated sports movie about a young mouse who disguises herself as her racing idol to participate in the titular Grand Prix. Perfect for young F1 fans, or lovers of Teutonic rodents.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy - 3rd July

Horror maestro Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise) offers a gruesome, deeply upsetting take on the classic Universal monster. Don’t expect any action-adventure quippery here - this is a distinctly different beast to the beloved Brendan Fraser films.

When their young daughter is found after disappearing eight years ago on a trip to Egypt, a family’s joy and relief soon turn sour when they realise she has come back different. Probably all that time she spent in a sarcophagus…

Bugonia - 4th July

Speaking of Jesse Plemons, he’s front-and-centre in the latest film from idiosyncratic filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor ThingsThe Favourite). This time he plays a guy who kidnaps a high-powered CEO (Emma Stone), convinced that she’s an alien in disguise, bent on destroying the Earth.

The thing is, he might be right?

Wicked: For Good - 10th July

The second and final part of the epic adaptation of the beloved stage musical, itself a revisionist retelling of The Wizard of Oz from the POV of the Wicked Witch of the West. All the stars are back for this last installment, as Glinda and Elphaba must come together to save Oz.

Stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey.

Redux Redux - 11th July

High-concept action sci-fi thriller about a woman who travels to various parallel universes to hunt down and kill the man who murdered her daughter.

Anemone - 12th July

The directorial debut of Ronan Day-Lewis, son of Daniel - who also came out of retirement to star in this dreamlike domestic drama about an ex-soldier who reconnects with his estranged brother to address long-held secrets.

Anaconda (2026) - 17th July

Credit: ANACONDA – Official Trailer (HD) (Sony Pictures Entertainment, YouTube)

Meta comedy remake about a bunch of ordinary people who set out to remake the original Anaconda, on location in the Amazon. When their stunt snake is accidentally killed, they set out to search for a replacement… only to find more than they bargained for.

Stars Paul Rudd (Anchorman), Jack Black (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Thandiwe Newton (Westworld).

In Cold Light - 18th July

Maika Monroe (It Follows) stars in this crime thriller about a young drug dealer who attempts to reclaim her empire on getting out of prison, only to find herself framed for murder.

Also stars Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Helen Hunt (Twister).

Night Patrol - 19th July

Horror thriller starring Justin Long (Barbarian). A young LAPD officer joins the elite ‘Night Patrol’, a group of cops that operates only after dark, only to discover that they harbour a dark, bloodsucking secret.

Lurker - 25th July

Psychological thriller about a young loner who manages to insert himself into the life of an up-and-coming popstar, and will do anything to remain in the in-crowd.

Eleanor the Great - 26th July

Comedy drama - and the directorial debut of Scarlett Johansson - about a nonagenarian woman who strikes up an unlikely relationship with a 19-year-old student in New York.

Stars June Squibb (Thelma) and Erin Kellyman (28 Days Later: The Bone Temple).

Primate - 29th July

Old-school creature feature that asks the question ‘what if Cujo, but monkey?’ When a family’s beloved pet chimpanzee contracts rabies, he begins to violently work his way through the group of expendable teens that have congregated at the house for a party.
