Kick-off classics: Greatest opening matches in World Cup history

The matches that delivered when all eyes were on the opener.

Every World Cup begins with a sense of anticipation. Fans wait years for the tournament to return, and the opening match carries the responsibility of setting the tone for everything that follows.

While some curtain-raisers have struggled to live up to the hype, others have produced unforgettable goals, historic upsets and electric atmospheres.

From iconic host nation moments to one of the biggest shocks in football history, these are the greatest World Cup opening matches of all time.

South Africa 1-1 Mexico (2010)

No opening match has captured the spirit of a World Cup and felt more like the beginning of something special quite like South Africa's clash with Mexico in 2010.

As the first tournament held on African soil, expectations were enormous, and the atmosphere inside Soccer City was unlike anything seen before. The sound of the vuvuzelas became the soundtrack to a historic occasion.

The defining moment arrived when Siphiwe Tshabalala unleashed a sensational strike into the top corner, sending the stadium into raptures and creating one of the greatest opening-match goals ever scored. Although Rafael Márquez equalised for Mexico, the result felt secondary to the occasion itself.

The energy, emotion and significance of the moment combined to create the perfect World Cup curtain-raiser. Plus, we’ll never forget Peter Drury’s iconic commentary that added to the all-time memorable moment.

Brazil 3-1 Croatia (2014)

The pressure on host nations is immense, and Brazil felt every bit of it when they opened the 2014 World Cup against Croatia. The five-time champions endured a nightmare start when Marcelo inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, silencing the home crowd.

Brazil responded through Neymar, whose equaliser settled nerves before a controversial second-half penalty gave him the chance to put his side ahead. Oscar's late strike sealed a 3-1 victory, but the drama, tension and expectation surrounding the match made it unforgettable.

It was a fittingly chaotic beginning to a World Cup that would later produce some of the most memorable moments in modern football history. For many, the vibes that came from the 2010 and 2014 World Cups will never be matches, and their opening matches were a statement for what was to come.

Argentina 0-1 Cameroon (1990)

World Cup opening matches are rarely remembered for major upsets, but Cameroon rewrote the script in 1990. The African side arrived in Italy as outsiders against reigning world champions Argentina, who were led by Diego Maradona and expected to begin their title defence comfortably.

Instead, Cameroon produced one of the greatest shocks in football history. François Omam-Biyik's looping header beat goalkeeper Nery Pumpido to give the underdogs a famous lead. Despite finishing the match with just nine men, Cameroon held on for a remarkable victory.

The result stunned the football world and remains one of the most iconic opening-day performances the tournament has ever seen.

Germany 4-2 Costa Rica (2006)

The 2006 World Cup exploded into life thanks to one of the most entertaining opening matches ever played. Hosts Germany wasted little time getting the tournament underway as Philipp Lahm curled a magnificent strike into the top corner after just six minutes.

Costa Rica refused to play the role of spectators, however, with Paulo Wanchope twice pulling them back into the contest. Germany eventually prevailed through goals from Miroslav Klose and a thunderous late effort from Torsten Frings, sealing a 4-2 victory.

Six goals, attacking football and a packed Munich crowd ensured the tournament began with exactly the spectacle fans had hoped for.

Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia (2018)

Few expected much from the opening match of the 2018 World Cup. Russia entered the tournament as the lowest-ranked side in the competition and faced questions about whether they could even make it out of the group stage.

Instead, the hosts delivered a stunning performance, sweeping Saudi Arabia aside with a five-star display in Moscow.

Goals from Yuri Gazinsky, Denis Cheryshev, Artem Dzyuba and Aleksandr Golovin transformed the mood around the tournament overnight. The scoreline was the biggest victory ever recorded in a World Cup opening match and immediately ignited excitement among supporters.

More importantly, it kicked off a tournament that would go on to exceed expectations from start to finish.
