History of England vs India

Early encounters and English dominance (1932–1971)

The first Test match between England and India took place at Lord’s in June 1932, marking India’s debut in Test cricket. England, a far more experienced side at the time, won comfortably.

For the next few decades, England continued to dominate the rivalry, regularly winning home and away. India struggled on foreign pitches, and their first-ever Test series win against England didn’t come until 1971, under the leadership of Ajit Wadekar and the brilliance of a young Sunil Gavaskar. That tour was historic, particularly the win at The Oval, which marked a turning point for Indian cricket.

Growing rivalry and Indian emergence (1970s–1990s)

The 1970s and 1980s saw a more balanced contest, with India winning more regularly at home thanks to their legendary spin attack. England maintained their strength on home soil, leading to a pattern where home teams largely dictated outcomes.

Notable moments include India’s 1986 series win in England, powered by Dilip Vengsarkar and Kapil Dev, and England’s return to dominance in the early 1990s with players like Graham Gooch and Ian Botham.

Modern era and fierce competition (2000s–Present)

Since the 2000s, the rivalry has become one of the most competitive and high-profile in world cricket. England’s 2007 tour of India was their last win there until recently, while India pulled off a stunning 2–1 comeback victory in England in 2007, their first there in 21 years. The 2010s saw see-saw battles, with dominant home wins on spinning pitches and occasional overseas triumphs.

In 2021, India took a 2–1 lead in a five-match series in England, but the final Test was delayed to 2022 due to COVID-19. That final Test at Edgbaston ended in an England victory, drawing the series 2–2. The emergence of Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullums’ “Bazball” and India’s formidable pace attack have added a new, aggressive edge to the rivalry.

England vs India Test 2025: Results so far

We’re two matches in to the five-match series with the third getting underway today, Thursday 10th July.

At the time of writing, the series is tied 1-1, with England taking victory in the first match while India got revenge in a major win during the second.

1st Test

The opening Test at Headingley in Leeds was a solid victory for England, showcasing their talents that are still on offer on their day.

India, under the new captaincy of Shubman Gill, had posted an impressive total of 471 in the first innings, asking a fair bit of England to catch to keep it close heading into the second innings. Thankfully for the hosts, Ollie Pope (106 from 137) and Harry Brook (99 from 112) were up for it and pushed to end the innings on 465, just six off of India’s total.

In the second, despite mega showings from Rishabh Pant (118 from 140) and KL Rahul (137 from 247), India largely collapsed on both ends, particularly numerous fielding lapses and lacklustre bowling, allowing England to capitalise and take a five-wicket victory having chased down India’s 364.

2nd Test

The second Test was a whole different story. India, who had never won before at Edgbaston in Birmingham, seemed to be out for revenge – and boy did they get it.

India’s captain was the star this time, totalling an incredible 430 runs across the two innings, 269 in the first and 161 in the second as the visitors stormed to a record-breaking victory.

The match was over by the end of the first innings, with India posting a whopping 587 after 151 overs. They then left England with minimal chances to chase thanks to some stellar bowling, in particular from Mohammed Siraj, who took six wickets alone.

Harry Brook (158 from 234) and Jamie Smith (184 from 207) saved some of the hosts' blushes, but it was only slightly as the rest of the side fell hard, with six ducks including a career-first in International Test cricket golden duck for captain Ben Stokes.

England managed to claw to 407 all out, lagging behind by 180 runs. But India didn’t let up in the second innings, declaring at 427/6 to leave England with an insurmountable target of 608 to win. But again India’s strong bowling, this time mostly from Akash Deep’s six wickets, led to England’s eventual loss by 336 runs.
